Strasburger Addresses Consumer Financial Litigation Trends, Topics

Written by Strasburger & Price, LLP on September 7, 2017

Strasburger & Price, LLP recently hosted the Consumer Financial Litigation Symposium for individuals involved in consumer lending and credit reporting, educating them on the latest topics, trends and issues related to litigating consumer debt. Attendees included representatives from a variety of entities within the industry, such as banks, credit unions, mortgage companies, credit card companies, collection agencies, and consumer reporting agencies.

“The objective of the symposium is to create a forum where professionals engaged in consumer lending, credit reporting and collections can obtain the latest information on trends, case law and emerging issues in their complex field,” said Paul Myers, Co-Chair of Strasburger’s Consumer Financial Litigation practice. “We assembled a team of experts who provided industry professionals with valuable information that would be difficult and time-consuming for them to obtain independently.”

Presentations included:

  • Hot Topics in Consumer Credit Reporting, an exploration of case filings and trends, recent court cases related to the Fair Credit Reporting Act, the future of alternative data, and trends in reinvestigation.
  • Data Furnisher Exposure and Best Practices, an overview on dealing with disputes, credit repair organizations, Chapter 13 Bankruptcy issues, and litigation traps and trends.
  • Avoiding Consumer Protection Pitfalls, a guide to background screening and the FCRA, the Telephone Consumer Protection Act and the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, as well as rules covering the collection of so-called zombie debt.

Presenters included Strasburger attorneys Paul Myers, Marc Kirkland and Amanda Loughmiller, each members of the firm’s Consumer Financial Litigation team. Other panelists included experts in the credit reporting, collections, legal and consumer lending industries.

Strasburger’s Consumer Financial Litigation practice helps companies navigate the complex federal and state regulations that govern debt collection, background checks, credit reporting and information privacy. Strasburger helps companies develop and implement compliance programs and, when necessary, defends clients against claims brought under various federal and state consumer finance laws.
