Strasburger Adds Immigration Partner Sujata Ajmera; Two Senior Counsel Return from In-House Positions

Strasburger & Price, LLP (Strasburger) is pleased to announce that Sujata Ajmera, Michelle Brockway and Michael Smith have joined the firm.
Ajmera joins as a partner in Austin and will head Strasburger’s firm-wide immigration practice. Brockway, a former associate with the firm’s financial litigation practice and financial services industry team, has rejoined the firm in Houston as senior counsel after a stint working for Amegy Bank. Smith, a former associate with the firm’s corporate practice and healthcare industry team, returns to the Austin office as senior counsel after three years at the Texas Medical Association.

Ajmera focuses her practice exclusively on business immigration and compliance law. She is Board Certified in Immigration & Nationality Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Ajmera has extensive experience in all areas of U.S. immigration and nationality law, but primarily practices in the field of employment-based immigration and compliance for corporations, academic institutions and non-profit organizations of all sizes. She has represented corporate clients, academic institutions and small to medium sized businesses in a variety of industries. Her expertise includes working with employers in obtaining non-immigrant visas and permanent residency.
In addition, Ajmera develops and assists clients in conducting I-9 compliance audits, including those arising from government investigations, and works with human resources and corporate counsel to devise I-9 and onboarding policies and procedures. Ajmera conducts training in these areas and speaks frequently at on topics surrounding business immigration and I-9 compliance. She is admitted to practice in Texas and received her J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law in 2005 and a B.A. from the University of Texas in 2001. She is affiliated with numerous legal associations, including the American Immigration Lawyers Association as well as the South Asian Bar Association of Austin, which she co-founded. Ajmera is also a member of the board of the Asian American Resource Center.
Brockway is a litigator who represents and defends clients in matters involving health law, banking and business and commercial disputes. During her tenure at Amegy Bank, she served as Senior Vice President/Associate General Counsel. She is admitted to practice in Texas and before the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of Texas and is affiliated with the American Health Lawyers Association and Association of Women Attorneys. Brockway holds a J.D. from South Texas College of Law, where she was valedictorian of the class of 2010 and a member of Law Review. She received an M.F.A. from Vermont College in 2000 and an M.A. from the University of Houston in 1990. She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Houston with a B.A. in 1983.
Smith advises clients on organizing and operating various business organizations, including physician practices and other health care entities. Smith works with physicians and other health care providers regarding compliance with federal and state laws and regulations related to privacy and security, fraud, waste and abuse and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Prior to rejoining Strasburger, Michael served as Assistant General Counsel of the Texas Medical Association where he worked on legislative and regulatory matters related to Medicare, Medicaid, Texas Health and Human Services Commission, Texas Medical Board, provider audits and investigations and various public health issues. He received his J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center in 2008, where he was publications and articles editor for the Houston Journal of Health Law and Policy. He holds an M.P.H. from the UT-Houston School of Public Health and a B.S. from Baylor University. Smith is admitted to practice in Texas and is a member of several professional associations, including the Health and Administrative Law sections of the Austin Bar Association, the American Health Lawyers Association and the Health Care Compliance Association.
