Strasburger’s Cynthia Day Grimes Provides Legal Education in Guam
February 15, 2018
Strasburger’s Cynthia Day Grimes, Partner in the San Antonio office, traveled to Guam last month to provide legal education to local lawyers and judges. She was one of 11 Fellows of the American College of Trial Lawyers who participated in an ACTL-sponsored Trial Practice Workshop designed to improve the legal systems in Guam and neighboring Pacific islands.
Presented in conjunction with the Pacific Judicial Council, the workshop addressed the concerns and aspirations of Guam judicial officers and lawyers to improve the standards of trial practice, professionalism, ethics and the administration of justice on the island. Topics covered during the three day program included docket and trial management, evidence review, expert testimony, search and seizure rules, writing judicial opinions, handling criminal cases, and Cynthia’s program “How to Try a Civil Tort Case.” More than 100 people participated in the ACTL workshop, including judicial officers, attorneys general, public defenders, and lawyers from Guam, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the Republic of the Philippines.
“We are proud of Cynthia’s participation in this ACTL Workshop, part of a program designed to encourage the rule of law in countries around the world,” said Marty Roos, Partner-in-Charge of Strasburger’s San Antonio office. “By offering her support and expertise to the lawyers and judges in Guam, Cynthia exemplifies the Strasburger values of dignity, respect and community service—whether local or global.”
ACTL selected Guam for this program due to the dual nature of its legal jurisdiction. While the Guam Superior Court presides over cases arising under local law, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit also has jurisdiction since Guam is a U. S. territory. Residents of the Micronesian island located in the in the western Pacific Ocean are U.S. citizens.
The American College of Trial Lawyers is an invitation-only fellowship of exceptional trial lawyers with diverse backgrounds from the United States and Canada. Membership is limited to no more than 1% of the total lawyer population of any state or province. The organization strives to improve the standards of trial practice, professionalism, ethics, and the administration of justice. Cynthia Grimes was among the ACTL’s first female members and remains one of seven women in Texas who are Fellows in the organization.
